What's happening now?
Since 2015, the World Figure Sport Society (WFS) re-invented the sport discipline of Figures and now all types of Figures are a part of World Figure Sport's Fancy Skating. The pinnacle events are the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships and the World Jr. Figure & Fancy Skating Championships & World Skating Festival.
Skaters from all countries may participate in WFS sanctioned events. WFS is independent of all other sports and arts organizations. WFS promotes the freedom to compete with everyone without any loss of eligibility status. In fact, WFS's eligibility requirement to skate and compete is to be human.
All World Figure Sport sanctioned events abide under World Figure Sport's jurisdiction and rules and are not governed by any other National, World or Olympic Organization.
Yes, all types of skaters are eligible to participate in the sport discipline of Figures and Fancy Skating as long as they show good sportsmanship and do not cheat. WFS does not promote the oppression of eligibility or ineligibility. WFS does not limit the freedom of skating, competing, freedom of association, commerce, or trade of skaters/coaches.
When sport organizations threaten a loss of eligibility status (for reasons other then poor sportsmanship or cheating) they become inconsistent with sport participation ideals. By limiting freedom of skating, competing, freedom of association and commerce for their membership sport organizations invert ideals that they profess.
Membership in sport organizations should enhance freedom of a sporting life at every age and stage of development. Now the sport discipline of Figure & Fancy Skating has a new worldwide sports organization found here at WorldFigureSport.org.
World Figure Sport operates independently from the jurisdiction of any other sport organizations and welcomes all types of skaters Figure Skaters, Inclusive Skaters, Public Skaters, Hockey Skaters, Ice Skaters, Roller Skaters, Speed Skaters & In-line Skaters and all are welcome to join us on the ice!
What is the historical perspective of eligibility?
Eligibility is the current distorted way to limit freedom and manipulate members in certain sport organizations. Originally, prohibiting athletes to compete in certain competitions was to protect the athlete's amateur status. This is no longer the case as everyone and anyone can now accept money to teach a skating sport even those under 18 years old. This now allows everyone the ability to be professional and still compete.
Originally, professionals were not allowed to compete in the Olympics. Being a professional was unacceptable and was completely separate from the amateur Olympic competitive field (one could not teach or accept any money). The best example of this distinction is Jim Thorpe, who in the early part of the last century had to return his 1912 Olympic gold medals (in pentathlon and decathlon) because he pitched in semi-pro baseball, a non Olympic sport at the time.
Since the 1990's, professional athletes have been allowed to compete in the Olympics (and Jim Thorpe was posthumously returned his medals!). Most sport organizations can no longer use the term amateur or professional. They have replaced these words with the word eligible. So amateur status is meaningless, but some sport organizations still control their member's competitive freedom, commerce and possibilities through the distorted use and antiquated concept of "eligibility."
World Figure Sport promotes and celebrates the freedom to skate & to compete with everyone and that an athlete is eligible by being human.
Figures were abolished until World Figure Sport revived the sport discipline in 2015!
The International Skating Union (ISU) abolished Figures 27 years ago. Therefore, the ISU no longer recognizes Figures as a sport discipline. It is unjustifiable that the ISU or any member of the ISU would deem a skater ineligible to participate in their recognized sport disciplines as retribution for competing in an unrecognized sport discipline that was extinct from World Competition for 25 years that is... until World Figure Sport's 2015 World Figure Championship & Figure Festival. The World Figure Sport Society announced at the medal ceremony of the 2015 World Figure Championship a new World Figure Hall of Fame.
Since 2015, the World Figure Sport Society (WFS) began communicating a spirit of sporting/competition freedom, commerce, and association for all members of other sport organizations. WFS hopes that all other national and international sport organizations are able to bestow that same necessary freedom on their members instead of limiting a member's freedom.
